Today, Turkana County witnessed the launch of a historic initiative aimed at fostering financial inclusion and economic empowerment for underserved communities, including refugees and host populations.
The Risk Sharing Facility, a joint effort between the International Finance Corporation (IFC) and Equity Bank Kenya, was unveiled in Kakuma under the leadership of Turkana County Governor, Hon. Jeremiah Lomorukai Napotikan. This initiative is the first of its kind globally, dedicated to addressing the unique financial challenges faced by refugees and their host communities.
Governor Lomorukai applauded the collaboration, highlighting its transformative potential: "This initiative is a game-changer for the people of Kakuma and Turkana County at large. By unlocking access to finance, we are empowering our communities to drive economic growth and build sustainable livelihoods."
The Risk Sharing Facility will enable refugees and host populations to access credit and other financial services, paving the way for small businesses, innovation, and job creation. The governor reaffirmed his commitment to working with partners to uplift the lives of all residents in Turkana County.
The launch marks a significant milestone in the county's journey toward inclusive development and economic resilience.
